Three is the group size that gets the balance right. Small enough that your instructor still watches each of you closely, big enough that there’s a crew to celebrate with when someone stands up. We run three-person lessons at Guardrails, a forgiving break near Lahaina, in water that holds a warm mid-70s to low-80s °F year-round. Bring two friends, or the core of the family. Morning sessions fill fast.

Why Three Is the Group Size That Works

Three hits the point where coaching and camaraderie both hold up.
With one instructor and three learners, nobody waits long for a turn, and everyone still gets eyes on their waves. Two friends and you, three siblings, a small family — it’s an easy number to coordinate and a lively one in the water. You’ll pick up as much from watching your friends’ rides as from your own.

How the Instructor Splits Time Across Three

Your coach rotates through the three of you, lining up one surfer at a time while the others rest just inside the break.
That rotation is the trick. One person paddles for a wave and gets pushed in; the instructor turns straight to the next. Nobody’s stuck on the beach, and nobody gets ignored. On the wide peak at Guardrails, three people spread along the wave and still hear the same calls.
Think of it as a relay. One up, two resting, then rotate. Because the waves at Guardrails roll in slow and often, the three of you cycle through plenty of rides across the ninety minutes, and the two waiting their turn learn by watching every attempt the third one makes.

Mixing Skill Levels in One Trio

A trio lesson works even when the three of you surf at different levels.

• Best for:  three friends or a small family who want coaching and a shared morning in equal measure.
• Not ideal for: anyone who wants nonstop personal attention — that’s a private lesson. Four or more? Move up to a 4-to-13 group lesson.

The Locals Teaching You

Your instructors are Maui locals who read these waves daily.

Owner and World Surf League competitor Kevin Sullivan grew up surfing the west side, and his crew knows exactly when to send each of you. Every lesson starts with 15 to 30 minutes on the sand. Everyone rides soft-top foam boards, around 12 feet, sized to each surfer. Sessions start at 8 or 10 a.m., and the earlier one tends to be the calmest for three people still finding their balance. Book a few days ahead in the busy months. If conditions turn on your date, rescheduling is free.
