Directions, Parking and What to Bring to Your Lesson

People email to ask one thing. Where exactly do I go? Fair question — Guardrails is a stretch of beach, not an address with a sign on it. So here is the whole thing, written the way you would want it read out to you in the rental car. It is a short drive from Lahaina and a straightforward one from the Kaanapali resorts, and once you know which beach park to watch for you cannot really miss it.

Quick Details

  • Meeting point: The sandy beach at Guardrails, just after Mile Marker 19 on Honoapiʻilani Highway (Highway 30), ocean side.
  • The landmark to watch for: Puamana Beach Park. Guardrails is about 500 yards past it.
  • Office address: 10 Hoohui Rd #110, Lahaina, HI 96761 — this is not the lesson meeting point.
  • Bring: Swimsuit, reef-safe sunscreen, towel, water. Board, surf shoes and rash guard are provided.
  • Booking: Online, by lesson format. Your instructor meets you on the beach.

Surf Lesson Directions

Your local professional surf lesson will take place in Lahaina at “Guardrails”. Guardrails is located just 100 yards past Mile Marker 19 off Highway 30 (Honoapi’ilani Highway), about 5-10 minutes south of Lahaina and Ka’anapali resorts and 25 minutes from Kapalua.

This surf break is ideal for beginners and intermediate surfers, thanks to its gentle, sloping waves that break close to shore. Family and friends who prefer not to surf are welcome to relax and watch from the beach!

Directions from Lahaina, Ka’anapali, or Kapalua

Getting There From Lahaina, Kaanapali or Kapalua

Head south on Honoapiʻilani Highway and drive about a mile past Lahaina.

Puamana Beach Park appears on the ocean side. That is your cue. Carry on roughly 500 yards from there and Guardrails is on your right, just after Mile Marker 19, on a stretch of road where the only landmark is the beach itself. Pull off on the ocean side. From the Kaanapali resorts this is a short run down the coast road; from Kapalua at the north end, allow around 25 minutes. Your instructor will be on the sand with the boards, so walk down and find them rather than looking for a building.

Coming From Kihei or Wailea Is About 45 Minutes

South Maui guests have a longer morning, and it is worth planning for.

It is roughly 45 minutes from either, north up Honoapiʻilani Highway. People do it every week and enjoy it, but budget the full three quarters of an hour rather than setting off twenty minutes before your slot. If you are staying in South Maui, the pages for your area walk through the trip and what to expect at this end.

Wailea works out much the same, and from either town booking ahead matters more than it sounds.

What to Bring, and What Not to

Swimsuit, reef-safe sunscreen, a towel and water. That is the list, and it is deliberately short.

The surfboard, surf shoes and rash guard come with every lesson, so there is nothing to hire and nothing to collect beforehand. Leave watches, wallets and anything you would hate to lose at the hotel — this is an open beach. If someone in your group is not surfing, bring them a chair. They will be able to watch the whole session from the sand, because the break sits close in.

The Office Address Is Not the Meeting Point

10 Hoohui Rd #110, Lahaina, HI 96761 is the business address. Do not drive there for your lesson.

It exists on maps, on the Google listing, and in every directory — which is exactly why people occasionally put it into a satnav on the morning of their session and end up in the wrong place. The lesson is at the beach. Off Highway 30, past Mile Marker 19. Point the navigation at Puamana Beach Park instead and drive the last 500 yards yourself.

Booking a Lesson

Reserve online by format, and the whole thing is settled before you land.

The formats run $220 for a private one-on-one, $280 for two, $360 for three, then $100 per person for four or more, before tax — all 1.5 hours. Maui has been busy through 2026 — 1,618,051 visitors in the first seven months alone, up 7.7 percent on last year — and early sessions go first, so book before you arrive rather than on the day.
